Quiz mode: tests, scorecards and personality quizzes
Check answers automatically, score every respondent, and send people to a result screen by score or outcome.
Quiz mode turns a form into a quiz. Answers are checked on our servers against an answer key that is never sent to the people taking it, so it can't be read from the page. Each response gets a score in Results and in your exports.
Three kinds of quiz
- •Knowledge quiz — right and wrong answers, points per question, and a pass mark. For tests, exams, trivia and training checks.
- •Scored quiz — every option is worth points, and the total puts people in a range (Low / Medium / High). For scorecards, lead scoring and self-assessments.
- •Outcome quiz — every option points to a result, and the most-picked result wins. For personality and "which X are you" quizzes.
Five ways to start a quiz
- •Describe it. When you create a form from a description, the "Plan your form" screen says whether it will be a form or a quiz, and which kind. Click Form, Knowledge, Scored or Outcome to change it before you build. If your description includes the answers, they become the key.
- •Start from a template: Trivia Night, Training Knowledge Check, Which Traveller Are You? or Marketing Readiness Scorecard. Each one arrives with its answers, points or results already set.
- •Turn it on in the builder: open Settings (the gear icon), choose the Quiz tab and switch on "Quiz mode". If a form already looks like a quiz, a bar in the builder offers to turn it on for you; close it with the X if you don't want it.
- •Ask the assistant: "make this a quiz" or "mark the correct answers".
- •Import a Google Forms quiz with its answer key. See "Importing a quiz from Google Forms" below.
A form that keeps score with logic rules (common in forms imported from Typeform) shows "This form keeps score with logic rules". Click "Review the conversion" to see the same scoring as a quiz before you switch.
Marking the answers
- 1Pick the kind of quiz under "Type of quiz".
- 2On each question, click the circle beside the right answer. A question that allows several answers can have several correct ones.
- 3In a scored quiz, give each option its points. In an outcome quiz, pick the result each option points to.
- 4Short-text and number questions take a list of accepted answers. Capital letters and extra spaces don't count against the respondent.
- 5Optional: add an explanation, shown after the question is answered.
The quiz chip next to the form title counts the questions and any that still have no answer, for example "1 missing answer". Click it to go straight to that question. When you publish with answers missing, you're told which questions nobody can get right, and can add the answers or publish anyway.
Open answers marked by AI
Long-text questions can be graded too. Give the question its points and write what a full-marks answer says. The AI marks each answer within a few minutes of the response, using one AI credit per answer. Until then the respondent sees that some answers are still being marked, and their final score may change. Without a description of a full-marks answer, the question isn't graded.
What respondents see
- •"Show respondents if they answered right": After each question (needs the one-question-at-a-time layout; their first answer is the one that counts), At the end, or Never. With Never, only you see the grades, in Results.
- •"What respondents see at the end": their score and the correct answers, or the score only. An outcome quiz shows just their result.
- •Pass mark: in a knowledge quiz, respondents pass at the percentage you set.
- •Endings by score (scored quiz) or Results (outcome quiz): each range or result sends people to its own ending screen.
- •Ending screens can show {{quiz:score}}, {{quiz:max}}, {{quiz:percent}}, {{quiz:passed}}, {{quiz:outcome}} and {{quiz:band}}.
Teacher tools
- •Shuffle questions: each respondent gets the graded questions in a different order. Not available when the form has logic jumps.
- •Leaderboard: the top 10 names and scores on the ending screen. It needs the score to be shown and a short-text question for the name. Tell respondents their name will be shown. Not for outcome quizzes.
- •Limit attempts: stops the same browser from taking the quiz again.
Lead tools (scored and outcome quizzes)
- •Ask for an email before the result: adds a required email question after the last question.
- •Save the result on the contact: the result and score appear as Quiz result and Quiz score in Contacts, where you can filter by them or start an automation. Contacts is on the Hot plan and above.
Exam tools (Hot plan and above)
You can set these up on any plan. Publishing a quiz that uses them needs Hot.
- •Time limit: for the whole quiz in minutes, or for each question in seconds (each question needs the one-question-at-a-time layout, and moves on when time is up). When time runs out, whatever they answered is submitted, and Results marks the response as submitted after the time limit. If a response has no record of when its timer started (for example, the timer couldn't start on a bad connection), Results shows "Time not recorded" instead of calling it on time.
- •Question pool: show each respondent N of your graded questions, picked at random. Questions that aren't graded, and open answers marked by AI, are always shown. Not available with logic jumps.
- •Certificate: a PDF for everyone who passes, or for everyone who finishes if there is no pass mark. Set its title, who issues it, and which question holds the name. It appears on the ending screen and in the result email. Not for outcome quizzes.
- •Email the result: sends each respondent their result, and their certificate if they earned one, to the email question you pick. It only includes what you chose to show at the end.
Results and exports
- •The Quiz panel in Results shows the average and median score, how many passed, how many are graded or still awaiting marks, and the score distribution.
- •In a knowledge quiz, each question shows the share of respondents who got it right.
- •To change a mark, click the score on an answer and enter the points for that answer. The total and whether they passed are worked out again.
- •If a response couldn't be graded when it arrived, it's tried again a few seconds later. If it still has no score, open the response and click Grade now.
- •CSV exports add Quiz score, Quiz max and Quiz %, plus Quiz passed (with a pass mark), Quiz band (with named ranges) or Quiz outcome.
Importing a quiz from Google Forms
Use Import Form → Whole account → Google Forms and pick the quiz from your Google Drive. The answer key, points, and feedback for right and wrong answers come across, and the answers stay hidden from respondents as they were in Google.
- •Paragraph questions that you mark by hand in Google come across ungraded. Write what a full-marks answer says to have the AI mark them.
- •If a correct answer in Google doesn't match any option, the import report tells you, so you can mark it under Quiz.
- •Importing from a pasted link can't bring the answers, because Google hides them on the public page. The quiz arrives as a regular form.
Turning Quiz mode off hides everything quiz-related and keeps your answer key, so you can turn it back on later.
